Steward Volunteering

Volunteer to be a steward

To ensure every event runs smoothly, we need a large number of volunteer stewards to manage audience access to venues and help them find their way around. You don’t require any particular skills to qualify, all we look for are dependable and conscientious people (over the age of 18) who enjoy getting involved and helping out.

stewards Our volunteer stewards are the 'oil' that keeps the weekend’s wheels turning and as such have played an important part in making the Marlborough International Jazz Festival what it is – one of the world’s leading music events of its type.

As a volunteer steward you have the opportunity to see many of the acts of your choice when not on duty (subject to venue capacity and entry limitations) and you may get the chance to meet the performers in person both front of house and ‘backstage’.

As the Marlborough International Jazz Festival grows, so the word spreads and the number of applications for volunteer steward places grows relentlessly. We filled all our steward places well before the event last year. We strongly suggest that if you want to be involved, make your application straight away on the form below.

Volunteers whose applications are accepted will also be added to the Stewards' Club mailing list and receive periodic updates.

The Stewards’ Club is also your opportunity to tell us how we can make the stewarding more effective and, of course, more enjoyable for everyone involved.

If you have any questions about becoming a volunteer steward, please contact us at .

The Role

As a volunteer steward you’ll be checking festival goers’ entry badges, monitoring numbers at each gig and helping as necessary at the venue.

There are usually at least two volunteer stewards at the venue’s entrance.

Duty periods can vary depending on the time of day. The longest period is during Saturday afternoon and is just over 5 hours, which includes a break of 45 minutes.

An area steward will be your immediate point of contact with the Festival organisers should there be any issue that can’t be resolved on the spot (such as police/first aid assistance, performer queries and so on).

Volunteer stewards will not be involved with any security issues for which we employ official stewards.
